the book is based on the wisdom gained from working with hundreds of students who have attended the authors after-school reading clinic, and reflects the authors practical approach. the book includes advice on helping students with english as a second language, as well as those with difficulties ranging from special educational needs to motivational and attention problems. phonics handbook includes lesson plans for every phonics skill from the basic alphabet sounds to blends, digraphs, syllable breaking and decoding latin and greek words. each lesson is followed by a worksheet for students. the book uses this format to incorporate diagnostic assessment to measure students needs at the outset of teaching, followed by a measure of whether the tutoring has been effective. additional teaching strategies are given to reinforce spelling and assist reading comprehension. strategies for hard to teach students and information on reporting to parents are included. the book also incorporates research into the best tutoring methods. very few books cover such a range of phonics skills, from simple letter-phoneme correspondences through to syllable breaking and the analysis of latin and greek words. there are specific lessons that cover the more complex phonics rules such as consonant digraphs, the silent e rule, the r- and l- affected vowels, and vowel digraphs. the section on syllable breaking has some new techniques that are very successful for teaching pupils how to read long words. the assessments are very wide ranging. the tests, often not available in other books, cover topics such as phonemic awareness and invented spelling. the book also includes a writing test, a test of basic decoding skills, an informal reading inventory, a reading motivation test, and a standardised test of word reading that gives a reading age. the book also includes chapters that teachers can use for helpful hints about teaching reading comprehension, spelling, how to work with difficult children, how to report to parents, and the history of english writing. the book has a scope and sequence for teaching phonics from beginner level to the entry level of high school. not many books have this kind of road map to guide the teacher. specific examples of practical problems which this book will solve: 1. phonemic awareness problems. we give ideas on how to teach this. 2. learning the sounds of letters. there are 26 lessons to teach this. 3. consonant blends and digraphs. there are dozens of lessons on this. 4. vowel patterns. many pupils struggle with these. for example, the silent e rule, the ar, er, or , ur, ir patterns, and the vowel digraphs in words like cow and tow, house and soup 5. syllable breaking. there are 6 essential rules that will teach a pupil how to read very long words.
