Drawing upon a vast body of brain research, the renowned psychiatrist, author, and thinker Iain McGilchrist reveals that the difference between the two sides is profound--two whole, coherent, but incompatible ways of experiencing the world. The detail-oriented left hemisphere prefers mechanisms to living things and is inclined to self-interest, while the right hemisphere has greater breadth, flexibility, and generosity. In the second part of his book, McGilchrist takes the reader on a journey through the history of Western culture, illustrating the tension between these two worlds as revealed in the thought and belief of thinkers and artists from the ancient to the modern, from Aeschylus to Magritte. He ultimately argues that, despite its inferior grasp of reality, the left hemisphere is increasingly taking precedence in today's world--with potentially disastrous consequences.

Prestigioso psiquiatra, literato, filósofo y neurocientífico británico. Es un antiguo investigador en neuroimagen de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Johns Hopkins y antiguo miembro del Instituto de Estudios Avanzados de Stellenbosch y del All Souls College de Oxford. Actualmente es miembro asociado del Green Templeton College de Oxford, del Royal College of Psychiatrists y de la Royal Society of Arts, así como consultor emérito del Bethlem and Maudsley Hospital de Londres. Cuenta con una amplia experiencia clínica y ha publicado varias investigaciones originales sobre la neuroimagen en la esquizofrenia, la fenomenología de la esquizofrenia y otros temas relacionados. A lo largo de su trayectoria también ha contribuido con capítulos a libros sobre diversos temas científicos, así como con artículos originales para periódicos y revistas científicos de renombre. Por otro lado, McGilchrist ha participado en numerosos programas y documentales de radio y televisión. Tiene varios pódcast y entrevistas en YouTube, además de conferencias, seminarios y comentarios publicados. Entre sus libros destacan algunos como Against Criticism, El maestro y su emisario. El cerebro dividido y la conformación del mundo occidental, The Divided Brain and the Search for Meaning: Why Are We So Unhappy?, y Ways of Attending. Su última publicación es la obra en dos volúmenes The Matter with Things (2021).
