John Champlin Gardner Jr. (Batavia, Nueva York, 21 de julio de 1933 – Condado de Susquehanna, Pensilvania, 14 de septiembre de 1982) fue un novelista, ensayista y crítico literario estadounidense. Estudió en la Universidad de Washington en San Luis y obtuvo su maestría y doctorado en la Universidad de Iowa. Su carrera académica incluyó la enseñanza en diversas instituciones, como la Universidad Estatal de San Francisco y la Universidad de Binghamton.

Entre sus obras más destacadas se encuentra "Grendel" (1971), una novela que reimagina el mito de Beowulf desde la perspectiva del monstruo. En el ámbito de la crítica literaria, publicó "Para ser novelista" (1983), una guía para escritores en formación. Su novela "Luz de octubre" (1976) le valió el Premio del Círculo Nacional de Críticos de Libros.
