Those not content to leave everything to the unfettered workings of the free market were desperate to find an alternative to a heartless capitalism that made masters of a few and slaves of everyone else. Communism and fascism were the two major alternatives, and with the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the rise of Hitler and the Nazis 1933 to power the stage was set for a war to the death between them.
