Death is difficult enough for adults to understand and to accept. Explaining death to children seems nearly impossible, in addition to being painful. It doesn't matter if the death is of a family member, a friend, or a beloved pet. The permanency of death is difficult to explain and to comprehend. In this book about two dachshunds, a child learns from these two lead characters that death is painful, and always unexpected, even if one tries to prepare for the inevitable. This story can help an adult explain death to a child. In, "You're In Charge Koko," difficult questions are addressed and answered in simple terms and in a way a child can understand. With this story, a child can understand that grieving is normal and that there are ways that one can keep the memory of that loved one alive.In, "You're In Charge Koko," a beloved senior pet named Benjamin prepares the younger pet, named Koko, for his eventual death. Koko goes through shock and then sadness. Through the caring actions of the members of his human family, Koko comes to understand that although Benjamin has died, he is not forgotten. Koko also learns that he can still be himself while honoring Benjamin in small, but yet significant ways.
