The surgical procedure in orthopedics wherein the articular surface of a musculoskeletal joint is replaced or realigned is termed as arthroplasty. Some of the major types of procedures in arthroplasty are joint replacement, resurfacing arthroplasty and resectional arthroplasty. Joint replacement involves replacing a joint or joint surface with a prosthesis through surgery. A single or both bone surfaces are shaved off and replaced by a metal covering in resurfacing arthroplasty.
