Not only does this water soak into the ground on the uphill side of the house, causing muddy areas, but it also saturates the soil next to the foundation to such an extent that hydrostatic pressure forces moisture in through every opening in the masonry. Either because of drainage problems or the roots may in fact cause the drainage problems. So, the idea is to start digging, explore the ground - while at the same time surf the Internet for modern building renovation methods as well seek up old time craftsman's wisdom. Furthermore, and especially, listen to friends and people in the local area. We all have an interest in passing on experience. The budget calls for DIY solutions. Reuse and wherever possible old recipes for building renovation.
