A lonely, alienated man becomes marooned in a world filled with strange creatures, rapacious predators, and humans he is not sure he can trust. As he slowly begins to learn the skills needed to survive his new life, he faces hunger, darkness, danger, sleeplessness, and crushing isolation. His loneliness grows, and he yearns always to escape from the terrible place where he is trapped.
