Mario Liverani (1939) es profesor emérito de Historia del Próximo Oriente antiguo en la Universidad de Roma «La Sapienza». Antiguo director del Centro per le Antichità e la Storia dell’Arte del Vicino Oriente y del Istituto di Studi del Vicino Oriente, así como de las revistas Oriens Antiquus y Vicino Oriente, es miembro de la American Oriental Society y doctor honoriscausa por la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. A su clásico Antico Oriente. Storia, società, economia (1988) se suman, entre otros muchos libros, L’origine delle città (1986), Uruk la prima città (1998), y, más recientemente, Oltre la Bibbia.
