16,46 €For Harriet Jacobs, the struggle for freedom was inseparable from the determination to protect her children. Writing under the pseudonym Linda Brent, she recounts a life shaped by slavery-and the extraordinary measures she took to escape its control.
Beginning with her childhood in North Carolina, Jacobs reveals how the people and places she loved could offer no lasting protection within a system that treated human beings as property. As she grows older, relentless sexual harassment and threats from her enslaver force her to navigate choices constrained by violence, dependence, and the possibility of separation from her children. Her account exposes slavery’s particular cruelties toward women, including the power enslavers exercised over their bodies, relationships, and families.
At the heart of the narrative is an astonishing act of resistance: Jacobs spends nearly seven years concealed in a cramped garret above her grandmother’s home. Unable to stand upright and largely cut off from the outside world, she endures physical suffering and isolation while remaining close to the children she cannot openly embrace. Concealment offers a measure of protection, but it comes at a profound personal cost.
Even escape to the North does not bring secure freedom. The threat of capture follows her, revealing how slavery’s reach extends beyond the states where it is practiced. Throughout her struggle, family bonds, trusted allies, and her own resourcefulness sustain her efforts to build a life beyond an enslaver’s claim.
First published in 1861, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is both an autobiographical narrative and a direct appeal against slavery. Jacobs challenges readers to confront the sexual exploitation, family separation, and judgments imposed on enslaved women, insisting that their choices be understood within the conditions they were forced to endure.
A firsthand account of resistance, motherhood, and the pursuit of freedom, this work bears witness to one woman’s determination to protect her children and claim authority over her own life.
