Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is a powerful, deeply personal autobiography that recounts Harriet Jacobs's life under slavery and her courageous escape to freedom. Published in 1861 under the pseudonym Linda Brent, it is one of the few remaining slave narratives written by a woman.
Jacobs highlights the distinct struggles faced by enslaved women, focusing specifically on sexual abuse, the fight to maintain chastity, and the fierce protection of her children.
A central and harrowing part of the narrative is her seven years spent in hiding in a cramped, coffin-like "garret" above her grandmother's porch to avoid a predatory master.
The memoir chronicles Jacobs's journey from servitude and degradation in North Carolina to attaining liberty and reuniting with her children in the North.
This work was designed to appeal to the humanity of white Northern women, exposing the hypocrisy of the master-slave relationship and the systemic injustices of American law.
