12,28 €Old Neno's Stories introduces English-language readers to the work of Musine Kokalari,
widely recognized as Albania's first woman writer of literary prose. First published in the
late 1930s and early 1940s, these stories portray everyday life in the historic town of
Gjirokastër in southern Albania during a period of social transformation.
Through the unforgettable voice of Old Neno-sharp-tongued, observant, proud, and deeply
rooted in tradition-Kokalari captures the rhythms of communal life: family quarrels,
marriage negotiations, gossip between neighbors, departures for work abroad, and the
tensions between older customs and emerging modern freedoms.
The collection unfolds in two parts. The first presents vivid scenes from neighborhood
life, where conversation reveals the moral codes, rivalries, and solidarities that shape
a tightly knit community. The second follows Old Neno herself as she travels abroad and
recounts her astonished impressions of modern urban life. Through humor, exaggeration,
and vivid storytelling, these encounters become reflections on generational change and
cultural difference.
Drawing on the cadences of oral storytelling, Kokalari's prose preserves the voices,
idioms, and emotional textures of everyday Albanian speech. Her stories offer not only
a portrait of a particular time and place but also a universal exploration of family,
memory, dignity, and the uneasy pace of social change.
This illustrated edition presents selected stories from Kokalari's early collections
Siç më thotë Nënua plakë (1939) and Nënua plakë në Romë (1940), bringing one of the
most important voices of Albanian literature to a wider audience.
