Chris Carter es un escritor, productor y director estadounidense nacido el 13 de octubre de 1956 en Bellflower, California. Se graduó en periodismo por la Universidad Estatal de California en Long Beach y trabajó como editor en Surfing Magazine antes de incursionar en la escritura de guiones para televisión y cine.

En 1993, Carter creó la exitosa serie de ciencia ficción The X-Files, que se emitió hasta 2002 y luego regresó en 2016 y 2018. La serie, que combina elementos de horror, conspiración y lo sobrenatural, se convirtió en un fenómeno cultural y le valió a Carter varios premios, incluidos tres Globos de Oro y ocho nominaciones al Premio Emmy.
