In the autumn of 1939, as Europe begins its descent into war, the small Irish village of Ballykeen is shaken by the arrival of a stranger found half drowned on the rocks below Cuan Dubh. She carries no papers, no ring, no clear past, and no explanation for the terror that follows her from the water.

The villagers call her Mairéad na Mara, Mairéad of the Sea.

But across the harbour lies Inisbride, a ruined island of roofless cottages, a chapel without a voice, an old burial ground, and the dark house on the western rise known as Teach Dubh, the Black House.
