Nacida en Lockport, Nueva York, en 1938, esta autora se ha consolidado como una de las voces más influyentes de la literatura contemporánea en Estados Unidos. Con una prolífica trayectoria que abarca más de cincuenta novelas, cientos de relatos breves, una docena de ensayos, once volúmenes de poesía y varias piezas teatrales, su obra es un testimonio del ingenio y la profundidad con la que ha explorado la condición humana.

A lo largo de su carrera, ha recibido prestigiosos galardones como el National Book Award, el PEN/Malamud Award y el Prix Fémina Étranger.
