This whimsical tale begins with Michael, a despondent American boy, better known as the Kano, who regrets his dismissive behavior toward the beautiful Maria, an immigrant from the Philippines.Michael finds himself on an unlikely journey to prove himself a worthy suitor when a mysterious figure, the Teacher, offers to instruct him in The Way of the Filipino. Magically, by invoking the phrase Ang Aking Espiritu Ay Filipino, he is no longer bound by time or space--and is transported to a Filipino world where the Lola, as the guardian of tradition, folklore, and superstition, imparts to him what it means to be Pinoy.As the good-natured tension between student and teacher mounts with the Kano's juvenile tendencies, the Teacher begins to wonder if the Kano has what it takes. If the Kano can discover the "something more" the Teacher is looking for, then he will be ready to go--back to the place where his heart waits for him.
