The Love Letter is about a married woman's love letter. At the heart of the letter there's a secret. In its journey it entertains, shocks, surprises, enthralls, stirs and lifts up. The protagonist rejects the love, and turns to St. Satyananda to save her, and knows that hankering for pleasure produces pain ultimately, and relationships without an element of selflessness fail, and gains inner power. The story is complex and complicated, but built up superbly, and it centres on the sophisticated life of Rajamundry, and moves around a host of interesting characters from life bringing home anger, anguish, the sorry aftermath of human deviousness, hypocrisy, deceit and boozing. The characters are round and archetypal, and spiced with penetrating insight. The Love Letter is an allegory in simple, lucid and scintillating prose. What leads to the love letter makes the novel a page-turner. Acclaimed as a college teacher for decades, Murty presents the naked form of the society in sprawling Andhra Pradesh under his view.
