Peter English decided he needed to spend some time with something softer than a loaded forty-five. After an evening of dining and dancing with the lovely Margo Lee Forrest at the famous Skyway, high atop The Hotel Peabody, the evening took a dramatic turn. As they were about the leave The Peabody parking lot, shots rang out nearby and soon police cars sped by with sirens blaring and red lights flashing. It's a well-known fact that former cops like to chase police cars as much as little boys like to chase fire engines. Upon reaching the crime scene, Pete found a bunch of cops standing around a stiff lying in his own blood on a Main Street sidewalk. His bloody torso had sustained multiple gunshots and there was one right in the middle of his forehead. But it didn't end there. Bodies started appearing all up and down Main Street...shot execution-style...sometimes in broad daylight...sometimes in front of dozens of witnesses. One of the stiffs had a hit list in his bloody shirt pocket, and Peter English's name was on it...along with the names of some other prominent Memphians...including some who were close to him.
