Reseña del libro "Wings Over Ephemeral Waters: Algeria's Wetland Birds: Unraveling population trends, flyway connectivity, and conservation priorities across three bioclimatic zones (en Inglés)"
Algerian wetlands are critical demographic nodes in the African-Eurasian flyway, with 99 bird species at 100 sites and 41 IBAs. The evidence base remains uneven, concentrated, and fragmented. This synthesis examines avifauna across the Tell, Hauts Plateaux, and Sahara. Hydroclimatic forcing drives interannual abundance variability, while agriculture, hunting, and hydrological alteration compound stress. We propose five testable hypotheses: rainfall-dependent hydrology governs endorheic populations; perturbations at key sites propagate flyway-scale consequences; threatened Anatidae respond more strongly to fine-scale habitat than climate; protected-area benefits are eroded by governance gaps; reported trends reflect methodological artefacts. The literature exhibits taxonomic bias toward conspicuous waterbirds, winter-count predominance, methodological heterogeneity, and short-duration windows that weaken causal inference. Conservation must shift from isolated inventories toward coordinated, standardized, detection-corrected monitoring spanning all bioclimatic zones, integrated within flyway-scale models to partition climatic from anthropogenic drivers and inform adaptive management.
