many methods of using passive and active control devices for absorbing vibratory energy have been studied by researchers around the world. however, passive devices are fixed and cannot be modified based on information of excitation or structural response. furthermore, active devices, while providing significant reductions in structural motion, typically require large (and often multiply-redundant) power sources, and thereby raise concerns about stability. semiactive devices, such as magnetorheological dampers, can provide significant response reductions comparable to those of active devices but with low power and in a stable manner. this book presents the state-of-the-art of semiactive control systems and illustrates several case-studies showing their implementation and effectiveness to mitigate vibration. after an introductory review of dynamic principles and control theory, semiactive technologies are explained and the reader is guided to analyse their practical applications. the design concepts and control algorithms are formulated in a simple and readable language making this book an ideal tool for practitioners. the main purpose of this book is to provide the designer with a sound grounding in the area as a guide toward the practical implementation of semiactive control techniques. at present, no structured material is available on this subject and the lack of experimental data is evident. a real strength of this work is that it will pull together a significant body of research that has been conducted on semiactive control strategies for vibration mitigation and present this material in a way that people not familiar with both controls and structural dynamics can understand.
