'The Crisis' is a novel by Winston Churchill set in St. Louis, Missouri during the Civil War. The story revolves around four main characters who are caught up in the political and social upheaval of the time. Virginia ""Jinny"" Carvel is the daughter of a southern gentleman, and she becomes the object of romantic interest for two men: her cousin, Clarence Maxwell Colfax, who becomes a cavalier in the Southern cause to win her approval, and Stephen A. Brice, a young lawyer from Boston who is passionate about Abraham Lincoln's cause. Eliphalet Hopper, a hard-working clerk, also plays a key role in the story as he seeks to advance himself financially and socially. As the war proceeds further, the romantic stress between the four main characters intensifies, and their loyalties and beliefs are put to the test.
