Zane Grey is considered by many as world's greatest writer of Western romance novels. His stories told epic love stories of young women and men in the Old West seeking romance while facing barriers of man and nature that seem impossible to overcome. His great novel, Riders of the Purple Sage, is included in the Library of Congress' listing of "books that most shaped America." Until his death in 1939, Grey's works were reported only outsold by the Bible and perhaps the McGuffey Readers. His popularity has continued to today with soldiers even carrying his Westerns with them to war. More than one-hundred Western movies were based Grey's stories and recently the Arizona Opera Company thrilled both new and old fans with its production of Riders of the Purple Sage. At a time when America's wild mustang population is facing tremendous stress from both the environmental and ranching communities, The Doctor's Wild Horses shares stories and excerpts from novels by Zane Grey that show his enduring admiration of these magnificent animals.
