using burnard ` s thematic analysis and heron ` s analytic framework, this study was conducted in a mental health division of a primary care trust. it set out to investigate the effectiveness of clinical supervision from multiple perspectives, those of senior management, middle management, as well as clinical supervisors and supervisees. the results reported indicate that clinical supervision increased self-confidence, improved the supervisees clinical skills and encouraged the service development. the study revealed a number of limitations in the process and gaps in nurses levels of competence in interpersonal relations, and provides a basis for a more critical approach to this important element of professional development.
