this book present research evidence on the effectiveness of criminal justice interventions in the reduction of crime. it draws together information about where, for whom, and critically, at what cost the interventions are effective. the studies evaluated are rigorously assessed for their scientific methodology, and are only those where the outcome measures sought crime reduction are included. the book is divided into five main sections: alcohol prevention and drug treatment studies, courts, sentencing and police interventions, probation and prison interventions, cctv and street lighting, and situational burglary and housing interventions. for each, the research evidence, current policy and practice, and findings from the review are discussed. two final chapters review respectively the costs and benefits of various interventions, and discuss future research and policy directions.
